With fire season comes greater risk of power outages, and power outages cause more than simply the temporary need for pre-20th century lighting.
After a blackout, property owners and families suffer from serious issues such as:
- -Spoiled food
- -Damaged appliances from power surges
- -Disconnection from internet, news outlets, and calls/texts from friends and family
- -Greater threat of carbon monoxide poisoning due to increased use of fuel-burning appliances
In response to the consequences of climate change, many of us are searching for better sources of energy. And companies such as SunPower® by Arizona Solar Concepts are responding to that need. We recently developed the Equinox® Storage Battery to help property owners and communities save money and protect themselves from power outages.
How Does the Solar Battery Work During an Outage?
The Equinox® Storage battery allows property owners to store solar energy during the day as a backup during a power outage or to avoid using electricity during peak hours.
The battery consists of two boxes that can be installed in a garage or outdoors. Inside the main unit (21 x 62 x 13.5 inches) is the battery microinverter and 1-2 batteries. It is normally capable of storing up to 13 kWh of energy. If you have a larger home, however, you can connect it to multiple units, and its storage capacity will double.
The other, smaller unit is called the Hub Plus. This is the control system, built with intelligent and intuitive software. Because you connect it to the back-up breakers ahead of time, it will automatically power the coinciding appliances and outlets in the event of a power outage. Therefore, you avoid the hassle of fumbling around in the dark like you would with a traditional generator. You can also adjust the amount of energy saved for backup and decide when it will be used. You choose how much of your house will switch to solar battery power, and the Hub Plus makes it happen.
Homeowners Aren’t the Only Ones Who Benefit
SunPower® is currently involved in massive solar power installation projects, helping areas such as Contra Costa County save millions of dollars in energy costs over the next 2-3 decades.
According to SunPower® Executive Vice President Norm Taffe, "Equinox® Storage provides energy certainty and the power to make electricity allocation decisions, easing concerns with scheduled power outages, prolonged wildfire seasons, and unpredictable energy rates that are becoming more common."
From business owners to governments, solar power consumers are simultaneously saving money and helping the environment.
